Meet Nebraska Author Douglas Polk

Douglas Polk is a lifelong resident of Nebraska, where he is a teacher. In between teaching stints in Nebraska, he also worked as a sports editor, editor, and columnist at numerous local newspapers. Polk is a published poet and artist, having had a number of paintings included at different juried shows in Nebraska.
The Legend of Garle Pond
An afternoon fishing trip to a local pond by a boy and his grandfather turns into an adventure in history, with many life lessons learned along the way. When Willie and his Grandpa Joe find an arrowhead, they soon realize it might be the key to unlocking the secret of a local legend regarding the town's favorite fishing hole.

Author Speaks at APS in Honor of Dr. Seuss' Birthday and Read Across America Day



Read Across America Day was observed at APS on Friday, March 20, in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. On this day, parents and students are encouraged to read. Both junior high and high school students were introduced to author, Douglas Polk, who wrote The Legend of Garle Pond. Polk, who is a newspaper sports writer and newspaper publisher/editor, spoke to students and gave tips and ideas regarding reading and writing. He shared his book with the students, as the book he wrote is geared toward adolescents. During the question and answer session, he told about some of his favorite books and shared why he thought the Harry Potter books are so popular with young people.  At the annual Read Across America Day celebrated at Arnold Public School, students listen to a presentation made by author, Douglas Polk.
